HOW TO GET TO FIUMALBO:

BY CAR:

DIRECTION FROM FLORENCE – ROME Fiumalbo is located on the valley side of s.s. 12 Abetone-Brennerio. Arriving from the highway take exit north of Modena in the Emilia and the exit of Pistoia in Tuscany and follow the signs to Abetone.

DIRECTION FROM FLORENCE-ROME Once in Florence take the motorway direction Pisa-Lucca (A11). Exit in Pistoia central bridge. Continue until the end of the freeway and then take the lane for Abetone. Follow the S.S. No 66 to La Lima. Continue to follow the S.S. No 12, to get to Abetone.

FROM LUCCA-VIAREGGIO-PISA Motorway exit in Lucca, follow the signs for Abetone and you will return on the right bank of the river Serchio. Follow the S.S. No 12 to Lima, then turn left for Abetone.

FROM NORTH ITALY Follow the best way for you to get to Modena. You can take the exit in Modena Sud or Modena Nord Campogalliano. In Campogalliano, follow the road to Modena and you’re on the freeway. Follow the SS Abetone 12, which is now the new freeway and you will arrive in Este Pavullo.   EVENTS:

In Fiumalbo there is a lot to discover about art and architecture of the past.

Oratory di San Rocco At the gates of the old town stands the Renaissance Oratory of S. Rocco. The original building dedicated to the Saint dates back to 1418, but the present structure was built in the first half of the sixteenth century and presents the characters of the Tuscan Renaissance. The interior of the oratory is very charming; it has been painted in 1535 by Carpi Saccacini. The frescoes, dated and signed, provide an interesting example of provincial painting of the sixteenth century.

Oratory Madonna del Costolo this oratory has been built at the end of the sixteenth Century and has been completely renovated in the early eighteenth century; then it was enlarged and equipped with a front porch and a bell tower at the end of the nineteenth century. Inside, behind the Baroque altar is placed in a plaster bas-relief polychrome with the Nativity, perhaps it dates back to the end of the sixteenth century and has been realized following the style of school Begarelliana

Oratory San Michele Originally this oratory was an ancient Roman temple of the twelfth century, then rebuilt. Inside there is a wooden crucifix of the fifteenth and a seventeenth-century painting. The bell dates back to 1931.

Church San Bartolomeo Apostle This church represent the Main sacred building in the historical downtown of Fiumalbo. The construction dates back to 1200 and was a small structure with the façade put on the orthogonal axis. It was rebuilt in 1592 using some material of the old building, in fact, today fragments and traces of the original structure are still; the axis of orientation was changed and transformed into the left side of the façade, where appears the portal with an elegant Renaissance porch on shelves. Over the centuries the church has been reconstructed and enlarged; the central nave was equipped with coffered ceiling (XVII sec.) and the chapels were reopened. In the church there are a lot of paintings and vestments to see.

Church of the Immaculate Conception Thios church is called the church of Whites because is the headquarter of the homonymous Brotherhood. It ‘s the result of a restructured building of the nineteenth century, with the ancient portal.

Chiesa di S. Caterina called “Church of the red Ones” Originally this church was part of the Convent of Dominican Sisters in 1579. The church was consecrated in 1601 by the Rector Ottavio Lenzini, which had expanded the parish church. It is called the church of the red Ones because of the homonymous Brotherhood. Now it is the the seat of the Museum of Sacred Art..

Pian Cavallaro The Aeneolithic artifacts of Pian Cavallaro let think of the existence of a prehistoric site at Monte Cimone. Machining chips, found with the artifacts attest that the works has been realized on the same place. The manufacturing material, excludes the existence of local quarries or factories. The archeological finds date back to 2000 BC

Celtic huts Along the river are Versurone Celtic huts, typical buildings with roof made of straw attributed to the presence of Celtic populations.

Museum of Sacred Art This museum is unique in the Apennines of Modena. The exhibition of worship objects was integrated with works of particular artistic significance including a copy of the Cross of Fiumalbo, processional cross that dates back to 1400. Many of the testimonies of the liturgy – parameters, signs, furnishings – comes from two ancient local confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament and Immaculate, which still exist. An example of these monuments are: the votive statues, paintings, wooden altar, the tabernacle, and yet the entire series of niches, scrolls, pinnacles and balustrades. TRADITIONS

Traditions have been growing from the origins of the country and all along the years, preserved by the love of the people of Fiumalbo for their land; these traditions are still e today.

La più significativa è la Festa del Patrono, San Bartolomeo. La notte della vigilia, 23 agosto, viene ripetuta l’illuminazione del paese a fiamma viva: torce, lumi, fiaccole, candele illuminano le vie percorse dalla processione con la statua del Santo. Partecipano, nei tradizionali costumi, le due Confraternite, dei Bianchi e dei Rossi. La festa termina con uno spettacolo pirotecnico. Il 24 ha luogo la fiera, con bancarelle per le vie; a concludere una tombolata.

The most significant feast is the Festa del Patrono. Saint Bartholomeo. During the eve night on August the 23rd, the country is completely lightened: torches, lights, torch lights, candles light up the streets traversed by the procession with the statue of the saint.
