Camaiore is the largest municipality in relation to the whole of Versilia and its territory has many characteristic environments. It extends from the beach in Lido di Camaiore, to the peaks of the Alps like Monte Prana, Mount Matanna and Mount Gabberi, passing through both high and low hills. The plains of caezzanese are also important, as they are known for the cultivation of flowers and the general growth of foliage, in addition to the lido’s promenade, there are also rolling hills with small crops of vitis and olives. From the hydrographical point of view, Camaiore is rich in water, especially ground water, which is continuously extracted for private use including; greenhouses and some adjacent municipalities for the provision of local reservoir replenishment. In the summer of 2007 strong earthquakes were felt that, according to some experts, where due to the excessive pumping of groundwater. Small rivers can be found throughout the area, which are fed by drainage water from the mountains, Amongst one of the more important rivers is the Lombricese that runs at the foot of Mount Gabberi, touching the nearby towns of Lombrici and joins another river, the Lucese, which comes down from the pass of the same name, arriving in the valley through Nocchi Marignana (Camaiore) areas and the lower part of Pieve di Camaiore up to Camaiore. From here onwards, it joins with the Lombricese to form the Camaiore river down to its mouth which is also called Fosso dell’Abate. Throughout the territory there are small ponds or lakes of small size fed from various sources. The coast of Lido di Camaiore is bathed by the Ligurian sea, which extends from Liguria to the promontory of Piombino and not the Tyrrhenian Sea as mistakenly believed.   History   Camaiore has strict Roman origins, which was one of the largest encampments contiguous to the city of Lucca and an important station along the Via Cassia. From this we find the origins of the name “Campus Maior” (Campo Maggiore).   In the Middle Ages, the town grew considerably thanks to the old Francigena, which follows northwest from Lucca, towards the Lunigiana and Passo della Cisa, and on to ‘Campo Maggiore’. The city represented the Twenty-seventh stage during the journey of Sigerico Canterbury, and was called Campmaior by the Archbishop of Canterbury.   In 1226, the Luccans destroyed the remote hill fortress of Montecastrese, situated above Camaiore on the slopes of Mount Prana, and the survivors of this battle migrated down to the valley in Camaiore as it offered more protection against future city-state attacks.[1]   Monuments Villa Borbone delle Pianore Chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione e di San Lazzaro Pieve di Santo Stefano Via Vittorio Emanuele Teatro dell’Olivo

THE SEA

With over four kilometers of fine sandy beach, dLido di Camaiore is from the beginning of the XX Century one of the most popular resorts. Gabriele D’Annunzio chose this location to enjoy his passion for Eleonora Duse. In that palace- then Rolandi Ricci – were guests the King Vittorio Emanuele III and Guglielmo Marconi. After World War II, Lido became a favorite resort for national and international tourism. Considering the hotels overlooking the sea and the private beaches, today Lido has everything you need to spend your holiday and to relax. Plus Lido is near to the mountains and to Lucca, Pisa and Florence. The beach is wide and comfortable, and on the seafront there are pubs , restaurants and shops.

EUROPA CINEMA

EuropaCinema was founded in Rimini in 1984 by Felice Laudadio, director of Venice International Film Festival in 1997-98 and president of Cinecittà Holding from 1999 to 2002, currently director of Taormina Film Festival. EuropaCinema was born after the collaboration of Federico Fellini, who created the logo of the festival and the first poster, made in the following years by Michelangelo Antonioni, Tonino Guerra, Ettore Scola, Marcello Mastroianni and Ingmar Bergman. EuropaCinema soon became one of the most prestigious festivals in Europe, considered by producers, distributors and authors an important alternative to the Venice Film Festival. EuropaCinema has conserved this role until 1989 when it was finally transferred in Viareggio, perfect city to host an event like this.

FESTIVAL PUCCINI

Torre del Lago,where every year takes place the Festival Puccini, is located between the lake of Massaciuccoli and the Tyrrhenian Sea, 4 km from the beaches of Viareggio on the Tuscan coast, 18 km from Lucca and Pisa. Each year the Festival hosts 40,000 viewers in its open-air theater, a few steps from the Villa Mausoleo where Giacomo Puccini lived and worked; nowadays this property has become a chapel which conserves Puccini’s remains. Torre del Lago is a favorite destination of opera lovers and tourists who wants to visit the places where one of the most beloved composer of the twentieth century has been living.

The Festival of Torre del Lago was born in 1930 thank to Puccini. ‘… I always come here and take the boat to go and shoot snipes … But once I would like to come here and listen to my work in the open air … ‘ (Puccini in Giovacchino Forzano in November 1924, before leaving for the clinic of Brussels where he died shortly after). The author of La Bohème and Madama Butterfly, ‘the last great poet of Italian opera, the greatest composer that Italy and the world have ever had during the XX century’ (Roman Vlad), expressed the wish to let live His creatures again in the incredible natural setting of the Lake of Massaciuccoli.

REPACI PRIZE

The Viareggio Prize, has been founded in 1929 and is one of the oldest Italian literature prizes. Leonida Repaci, Carlo Salsa and Alberto Colantuoni which met Primo Conti and Gian Capo: two intellectuals who in those years loved to spend their holidays on the coast resort of Versilia; these artists had the idea to create a literary prize that could take place on the beach under the umbrella. They were inspired by a coterie of the Bagutta Prize, born in 1926 in Milan, but these artists decided to realize a prize in the open air instead of an literary event in a closed restaurant. Putting fiction non-fiction and poetry on the same level, Viareggio brought together leading intellectuals of the that period since the 30s; all these artist have represented a milestone for the development of Italian culture. These are some of the writers who contributed to the Viareggio Prize: Luigi Pirandello, Eduardo De Filippo, Concetto Marchesi, Francesco Flora, John Russo, Massimo Bontempelli, Giacomo De Benedetti, Alberto Savino, Orio Vergani Giuseppe Ungaretti, Roberto Longhi, Alfredo Schiaffini Guido Piovene Franco Antonicelli. The Prize was interrupted during the war – Viareggio was bombed – then since 1947 has started a new virtuous cycle, when the letters from prison of Antonio Gramsci were awarded. In the following Carlo Emilio Gadda, Elsa Morante, Anna Maria Ortese, Alberto Moravia, Italo Calvino, Giorgio Bassani will be the winner of this Prize. Most of them have been called by Repaci to the jury of Viareggio.
